My word for 2023

Happy New Year one and all. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas. Ours was a rather lazy affair of movies, junior scrabble and lots of cheese- can you relate? The break was welcomed but we are now ready and raring to get back to work and see what this year has in store for us.

If you have been around for a while and are a seasoned follower of the Mayajoy blog, you will know that I actually kicked this blog off with my word for 2022. If you haven't read it already, you can have a little recap here

Re-reading about ways in which to focus has given me a little boost. I have to say that reflecting on a word for an entire year is so good for me. There was never a moment that I forgot about it and although there is always room for improvement and I probably could have achieved more, I think I really did focus over the last 12 months. I am slowly finding my groove, though naturally if I had my own way I would be miles ahead, stocked nationwide and earning a comfortable living but alas, my time has not come yet- it will! (see that affirmation?)

2023- is it set to be more of the same? Could we ever have imagined a cost of living crisis, energy prices going through the roof and all the rest? Whoever thought it would be a good idea to start a business is absolutely mad (and don't I know it) BUT when you get to a certain point it becomes a case of sink or swim. Am I willing to throw in the towel because it's hard? The answer is of course no- I've come too far, I've spent too much money and honestly I feel like I'm on the brink of something and for the first time in my life- I have to see it through.

My word for this year is- Vision!

The dictionary says that the word vision is the faculty or state of being able to see. As I always seek out the etymology, the word from c.1300 means "something seen in the imagination or in the supernatural or dream."

I just love this. Whilst pondering on this word it struck me that if you can't see yourself achieving something, if you can't even dream it, then how will you accomplish it? The idea of seeing yourself living out your purpose, your hopes and dreams is quite profound.

Ok, so you may be thinking 'seeing yourself doing something doesn't make it happen' and no, that would be true. However the very act of seeing yourself achieving your goals focuses your mind on the steps needed to get there.

For example, if I see myself 2 stone lighter, wearing an old dress which I haven't fitted in since having my first daughter, I know that in order to be that person I need to exercise more, eat healthy, get a good night sleep etc. When faced with the dilemma of having another slice of pizza, I may instinctively choose to decline because my sights are set on becoming the person I am envisioning.

This works in the workplace too. I have the vision of being stocked in retailers and having my own range of homeware and gifts. If I see myself doing this successfully, I know that I need to be contacting retailers, I need to attend trade shows and be networking with buyers etc. The mere act of having vision will guide my steps, taking any confusion out of what I should be doing next.

When I met Cherelle from Kitsch Noir we did a vision board, which I guess is a similar kind of thing. We arranged a page of images that we could revisit to remind us of what we wanted to achieve.

Having vision for your life is really just daring to dream. I have talked about it so many times. If money was no option and there were no family constraints, what would you do? Start there. Dare to dream. What would living out your dreams look like? What would you eat for breakfast every day? Who would you hang out with? What would you read? All of these questions will start to help shape the dream life you want to live.

So my loves, 2023- it may be a year of more of the same- uncertainty, financial worries etc but no one can take away our dreams. George Washington Carver said "Where there is no vision, there is no hope" and Arnold Schwarzenegger said "Create a vision of who you want to be, and then live into that picture as if it were already true". In reality, the only people standing in our way is us- so why not take this next year to re- examine what's important and spend some time answering the following questions:

1) If I could do anything, what would it be?

2) Picture yourself doing that- what would your day look like? eg What would you wear, what would you eat, would you wake up early or work late etc?

3) What one thing could you do to get 1 step closer to this dream?

4) What's stopping you or holding you back?

I hope you will find these questions useful. If you have answered these questions and you are struggling with what to do next, please don't hesitate to contact me and I can offer some more tips on what to do next.

Here's to the next 12 months lovelies, thanks for coming on the ride.

Lots of love
