5 ways that journaling can improve your life

Hey gorgeous, it's so nice to see you.

The first couple of weeks of 2023 have felt a little....how can I explain...? Overwhelming to say the least. The anticipation of what may be thrown at us in 2023 is daunting, the pressure that we put on ourselves to accomplish something great starts to catch up on us as the reality of how hard it can be to maintain consistency dwindles away and boy its freezing and dark, which really isn't doing anything for anyones mood.

Wait...what if I told you that there was something that could help to keep you accountable, lift your mood and take away that overwhelm? Surely you would jump at that right? I mean everyone wants something to make their life easier, a quick fix, the next best thing. I would definitely give it a go.

Well I can't say that its a quick fix but it doesn't cost a tonne and it may even change your life- big claims I know but its true.

I'm talking about journaling of ofcourse. It's not a new phenomenon and I've been talking about it for a while but with the start of the new year and people wanting to make some positive changes, I thought it was only right to revisit and speak about the benefits of the humble notebook.

I have been journaling for a couple of years now. What started as free therapy was later upgraded to a place to hide my dreams and later still a place to unpick and reflect on the accomplishments I have made and hope to make in the future.

So how can the act of writing stuff down change your life? Keep reading to find out.

1) It improves mental wellbeing. If you are like anyone else on the planet, I think its safe to say that we have all had periods of time where we have struggled with our mental health. Feelings of isolation, financial strains, uncertainty of the future, it takes its toll. Journaling helps to get our thoughts and feelings out in a way which is often easier than saying it out loud. Once on paper it is easier to deal with and process, providing relief from stressful situations. Also the time spent journaling is a welcome distraction and offers relief from over stimulation.

2) Writing our goals down helps us reach them more easily. The act of writing things down and then reading them keeps our goals at the forefront of our mind. Remembering what we set out to do is half the battle. How many times have you vowed to do something, only to 6 months later realise you completely forgot about it? Hey listen- no shame, it happens but if you want to get serious about your goals, you need to hold yourself accountable and write it down.

3) Self reflection allows us to face the not so nice bits of ourselves. When we write down our attitudes and thoughts, we gain fresh perspective. Have you ever re read an entry in your journal and thought how angry or sad you sound? Discovering parts of ourselves that we perhaps don't want others to see is a great catalyst for change. Being self aware and identifying our blind spots is a healthy part of growing up and can improve our relationships with others. You can start your journey of self discovery by being honest with yourself. Remember- a journal is for your eyes only.

4) It encourages gratitude and motivates you to make the most of each day. Knowing that you are going to keep a record, challenges you to find the good in each and every day. Regularly finding something to be grateful for will make you a happier and kinder person.

5) It allows you to be your authentic self. How many times have you held back from saying how you really feel for fear of looking silly or being criticised? When journaling, you are free to be yourself. You can speak freely without repercussion and you get to decide if what you are saying is good or not. This plays back in to point number 3. Self reflection. If you like what you see, journalling should help you grow in confidence, knowing that what you have to say is valuable. If you don't like your entries after you read them back, it allows you perspective to change, if you so wish.

So there you have it. Journaling is a powerful tool which is completely about you. It is possibly the only thing in life that you can do purely for yourself and the long term benefits are held in high esteem from the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffett & Leonardo Da Vinci.
