5 tips to help you stay motivated.

Updated: Jul 18, 2022

What do you do when everything appears to be going wrong and your get up and go has checked out? It would be so easy to give up wouldn't it? Trust me, I have been there more than once. But please don't! I have some handy and practical tips which you can pinch in order to stay motivated and continue on your journey to smashing your goals. What's even better is that I can come back and refer to them myself so its a win win situation if you ask me.

So grab a coffee, or in my case a decaf almond milk cappuccino (because I really am that person) and lets get motivated.

Tip #1 - Take a break

Ok, I know that this sounds like a weird one but actually it makes total sense. When we lack motivation it's usually because we are overwhelmed, overworked or burnt out. Or in my case my children are off school sick and its thrown me off my stride- can you relate? We keep running on empty, fully aware that we aren't motivated but we try to push through it without ever taking a step back to examine what's actually going on.

Just stop working and take a break! The efforts made when lacking motivation is counter productive and won't give you the results you want. Instead, read a book, take a walk or run a bath and try to relax.

Tip #2 - Better planning

I hate to admit it but planning has often been my downfall. You have probably heard the saying "Failing to plan is planning to fail"- now I don't believe in failure BUT I do think lack of planning is setting us up for a fall. Without even a loose plan in place, we go around aimlessly and wonder why we aren't getting anywhere.

Try to schedule at least 1 hour or so each week, to plan out the next 7 days. Trust me when I say that you will feel so accomplished ticking jobs off your list that you will have motivation in bucketfuls. Don't fall in to the trap of filling your days though, just picking 2 or 3 things each day will make a huge difference.

Tip #3 - Remember your "Why"

What is your driving force for doing what you do? Perhaps you are gearing up for a promotion, want more money or simply personal achievement. For me, my reason for Mayajoy is my two daughters. I want them to grow up believing that they are able to achieve their dreams- that the only limit is their imaginations. In order to teach them this, I needed to do it myself. This is such an easy motivation for me because the further on my journey I get, the more my daughters love getting involved and they give me little pep talks. When I don't feel like working or when things are going wrong, I can think of them and they carry me through.

If you don't yet have a "why" or reason for wanting to achieve your goals, start by thinking why its important to you. It needs to be something which will carry you through when life gets hard.

Tip #4 - Use visual aids

Before you can achieve it, you first need to visualise it. This can be really hard if our dreams and aspirations seem so far out of reach but I challenge you to give it a go. If you haven't already, dare to write your goal down! Writing it makes it real and gives us something to work towards. Better still, create a vision board! You can use Pinterest or even better- get some card and use imagery to create a visual representation of your goals. Put it somewhere where you will see it every day as a daily reminder- perfect motivation to get to where you want to be.

Tip #5 - Journal your achievements

This one is really important. When we lack motivation, we can feel as though we aren't getting anywhere- Guilty as charged! The truth is- thats a lie. We mustn't forget our accomplishments- Even several tiny achievements add up. Write them down as a reminder for later. Reading that entry about that "yes" from a client, closing that sale or stepping outside of your comfort zone is something worth celebrating but it is all too easy to forget because we are always in a rush to get to the next thing. Do yourself a favour and write it down!

Here's some prompts to help you:

'What went well today?'

'How did it feel?'

'How did I celebrate?'

'What's next?'

Feeling motivated?

So what do you think? Are you feeling motivated? Remember it's OK to take a break sometimes and its normal to lack motivation occasionally- the difference is, we don't want to stay there for long! I hope you have found these tips useful. To help you maintain your new found motivation, check out these positive lifestyle journals which will be the perfect accompaniment to smashing your goals.
